In 1988 Bill Parkinson and I put together the small paperback On the History of Physics at Michigan; I designed the cover. Shortly thereafter, Allison Reeves of Prentice Hall asked whether I would design a cover for the 2nd edition of the Griffiths electrodynamics text, and about a decade later, she asked for a cover for the third edition. For reasons that are not entirely clear, appropriate credits don’t appear in either edition.

Imes and Moore: African American Pioneers in Physics
Infra-red spectroscopy on HCl done by Imes in 1918 was the first to clearly show that molelcular rotation is quantized. He was the second African American to earn a PhD.
Willie Hobbs Moore was the first African American woman to earn a PhD in physics.
